The Three Things You Need In Life
This is possibly my favourite speech of all time. Huge call I know, but like many others around the world I’m sure, this speech by Matthew McConaughey for hist best actor win at the Oscars is a thing of beauty.
And the moral of his story is so damn spot on. McConaughey mentions how he needs three things everyday:
#1 Something to look up to
#2 Something to look forward to
#3 Someone to chase
Now on first inspection, you’d be forgiven for thinking those are quite vague – but I feel it’s intentional. I don’t want to do the injustice of explaining what the film star said – it’s up top for you to enjoy yourself.
But what struck me the most was point three – someone to chase. And it’s the idea of chasing essentially a better, future version of yourself. Almost setting a benchmark of yourself in 10, 15 years, and setting it high. Because as McConaughey notes, that future benchmark of himself that he chases is almost never possible to reach.
And that’s just fine with him, because it allows him to keep striving to be a better, more complete person. So find something to look up to, something to look forward to, and chase a better version of yourself everyday – it’s the least you deserve.
